SAP HANA virtualization process

The following material introduces you to the overall process of deploying the SAP HANA virtualization solution. A sequence of high-level steps is presented; each step briefly describes the task and the expected result. Refer to the embedded links for more detailed information.

  • Begin by reviewing the general Delphix Continuous Data Engine architecture diagrams. Identify existing or new SAP HANA source, staging, and target Environments, the underlying Operating Systems, and SAP HANA database versions. This will give a good understanding of the architectural strategy and confirm support.

  • Review the SAP HANA Support Matrix. Confirm that your combination of SAP HANA software, host operating system, Delphix Engine version, and SAP HANA connector version are supported for the various environments which will integrate into your SAP HANA deployment. Early validation will reduce unexpected issues later.

  • Install the SAP HANA connector. The SAP HANA connector extends the Delphix Continuous Data Engine to SAP HANA datasets. It is recommended to stay current with the latest version of the connector.

  • Create staging and target environments. Create the staging and target hosts and ensure that they are running and reachable. Follow the host requirements to configure the respective environments. The staging environment will host a SAP HANA instance that the Delphix Continuous Data Engine will ingest from. The target environment will host one or more SAP HANA instance(s) in which the virtual database copies will be created.

    • Consult the source environment and staging/target environment requirements documentation for configuration details.

    • If infrastructure is a concern, the same SAP HANA instance can be used as both a staging and target environment.  More details can be found in the staging/target environment documentation.

  • Add Staging and Target Environments in the Delphix Continous Data Engine. Use the "Add Environment" operation in Delphix Continuous Data Engine for each host, which informs the engine to register the specific host and catalog the SAP HANA software installation(s) on that host.

  • Link the SAP HANA source database. The user will have to add a source config and then use the source config to create the dSource. Creating a dSource allows the Delphix Continuous Data Engine to capture a copy of the source data. Many ingestion methods can offer a variety of methods to capture the data to be virtualized by Delphix. Therefore, we encourage you to identify the ingestion method that best suits your organization and infrastructure policies.

  • Provision virtual SAP HANA databases. Administrators and users can provision multiple copies of the source data as virtual databases.
